“I’m pro-choice because the personhood of a embryo/fetus is irrelevant: no person has the right to impose themselves on another’s body.
I’m pro-choice because every child should have the right to be a chosen child, whether or not their conception was intended.
I’m pro-choice because parenthood is way too damned hard for anyone to be forced into it.
I’m pro-choice because people with uteruses are, y’know, people, and capable of making their own decisions.
I’m pro-choice because there’s no way to ban abortion without upping the death rate of women.
I’m pro-choice because intended or not (and I’d argue it mostly is), the outcomes of abortion bans are misogynist and reify patriarchy.
I’m pro-choice because I refuse to tell you what to do with your body, and I wish the same right extended to me.
I’m pro-choice because banning abortion doesn’t help recognize the personhood of children, it removes the personhood of people with uteruses.”

I’m pro-life because a fetus is not composed of the mother’s DNA and body material, and is thus a separate being.

I’m pro-life because the personhood of a fetus is relevant: that fetus did not choose to impose itself on someone else’s body.

I’m pro-life because even an unchosen child can live a completely worthwhile life.

I’m pro-life because while people with uteruses should definitely make their own decisions, freedom of choice implies responsibility for the results of that choice.

I’m pro-life because a pregnant woman is not forced into parenthood. Adoption exists (and needs to be more propagated by others who oppose general abortion. Hint hint.)

I’m pro-life because our government’s purpose is to protect the rights of the weak against the strong, the voiceless against the powerful. While women’s interests thus do need to be protected from the selfish interests of men, a fetus is weaker than a woman.

I know these are not perfect arguments. But I think they are worth considering.

I respect your right to these beliefs as long as you do not impose them upon me by supporting laws that ban abortions. Instead, support education and outreach and counseling for abortion. Life is a beautiful thing, but blanket bans upon abortion with no regard to the mother’s life horrify and sicken me. I’m not an abortion proponent any more than I am a proponent of murder, but I will not stand by and allow other people to decide whether my uterus is occupied or not.

Yeah, see this right here?

“I’m pro-life because our government’s purpose is to protect the rights of the weak against the strong, the voiceless against the powerful. While women’s interests thus do need to be protected from the selfish interests of men, a fetus is weaker than a woman.”

That’s pretty much her wanting the government to step in to protect the “rights” of an unborn. Thus trampling over freedom of choice regarding one’s own body. Thus, with the above statements, she is in favor of imposing those beliefs on people.

See, here’s the thing. I have relatives — an uncle’s wife and my mother stand out — who are pro-life and pro-Roe v. Wade repeal. These people I won’t hear out on politics. However, the aunt I live with is pro-life in the sense of being anti-killing: she is against the death penalty as well as abortion, but she is ALSO in favour of the government getting the fuck out of people’s private lives and so is NOT in favour of laws banning gay marriage or abortion. She’s got the right idea.

Just because abortion is legal does not mean any particular person has to have one. Just because abortion is legal does not mean it’s the FIRST choice of any pregnant woman. Abortion is legal because it NEEDS to be an option in case others are not feasible.

Personally? I refuse to give birth. Absolutely refuse. My vagina is a one-way street. I won’t be pushing watermelon-sized objects out. I fully intend to utilise contraception whenever I am sexually active because I’m not a fucking idiot. But should my contraceptive methods fail I damned well expect to have my backup plan in place. And yes, contraception SHOULD be readily available and covered by insurance, as should medically-necessary abortions.

In short: people who are pro-life without favouring government bans on abortions I can tolerate. People who are pro-life and anti-choice and who favour the government interceding and legislating people’s private lives and medical decisions need to get the fuck off my tumblr.

I usually try to keep politics off my tumblr, but this is more than that and needs to be heard by so many people that I’m reblogging it. I fully agree with everything mmejavert’s written up there.

Do what you want with your own body. Don’t try to tell someone else what to do with theirs.
